Although Awkwafina is not truly hated, Twitter has called out the actress for being in too many films, and that she should not have been cast for the upcoming film. Some have also voiced opinions on her personality, with one user calling her a racist.

The star will voice the character Scuttle in the live-action remake. Talks for her casting began in 2019, when the star told Entertainment Tonight, "Aww man, that all isn't confirmed yet, but obviously if it happens, I would be more than honored." Shortly after this, it was confirmed that she would be part of the film.

Awkwafina's three breakout roles were in 2018, starring in Dude, Ocean's 8, and Crazy Rich Asians. She later starred in Jumanji: The Next Level and The Farewell, winning a Golden Globe for that role in 2019.

Her latest film role is Katy in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film was met with positive reviews from critics, who also praised Awkwafina's performance. As of this publication, the film has grossed more than $160 million at the box office, and has become the third-best opening day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid plans to resemble the original film, telling the story of a young mermaid named Ariel (Halle Bailey) who trades her singing voice to get human legs. Actress Melissa McCarthy will take on the role of Ursula, while stars Daveed Diggs and Jacob Tremblay will play the voices of Sebastian and Flounder.

The actress will continue starring in the Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, with its second season premiering on Aug. 18. Other than The Little Mermaid, she will also star as Ms. Tarantula in The Bad Guys and Kate in Swan Song. The Bad Guys will be released on Apr. 15, 2022, while the release date of Swan Song is currently unknown.

Awkwafina's films and television series are available on multiple platforms such as Hulu and HBO Max. The Little Mermaid will be released in theaters on May 26, 2023. As of this publication, there is no word on whether or not this film will be released on any other streaming platform.
